Fast Facts About Fire

  • Half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Only one in five home fires were reported during these hours.
  • Three out of five home fire deaths in 2009-2013 were caused by fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
  • Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half
  • Two of every five home fires started in the kitchen.
  • Unattended cooking was a factor in one-third of reported home cooking fires.
  • Children under five face a higher risk of non-fire burns associated with cooking and hot food and drinks than of being hurt in a cooking fire.
  • Children under five accounted for 30% of the 4,300 microwave oven scald burns seen in hospital emergency rooms during 2014.
  • Most deaths in home smoking-material fires were caused by fires that started in bedrooms (40%) or living rooms, family rooms, or dens (35%).
  • Nearly three in five candle fires start when things that can burn are too close to the candle.

Quartzsite Fire District,

Everybody has seen fire extinguishers. Many people have them in their car, at home, or at work. But not everyone understands them or knows how to work them.

Quartzsite Fire District would like for you to have a working knowledge of fire extinguishers. It could save your life or those whom you love.

Fire extinguishers are not designed to fight a large or spreading fire.

Even against small fires, they are useful only under the right conditions.

An extinguisher must be large enough for the fire at hand. It must be available and in working order, fully charged. The operator should be familiar with the extinguisher so it won't be necessary to read directions during an emergency.

Remember that extinguishers need care and must be recharged after every use.

IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT THE EXTINGUISHER

and how it should be used, serviced, and inspected ASK US !!!!.

ALSO REMEMBER

A partially used unit might as well be empty.

You may need more than one extinguisher in your home. For example, you may want an extinguisher in the kitchen as well as one in the garage or workshop. Each extinguisher should be installed in plain view near an escape route and away from potential fire hazards such as heating appliances.

Quartzsite Fire District,

Knox Box Program

In 1975, Knox introduced a security lock box as its first product. Today, Knox provides a variety of products for over 11,500 departments and governmental agencies throughout the US. A Knox Box is a secure key safe that mounts on the wall of a building. The only keys available to open the box are in the possession of the fire company. When there is a fire alarm or a fire, the fire company can access the key safe and use the building keys to enter the building rather than breaking into the building. This is particularly beneficial for incidents involving water flows or automatic alarms where there may not be actual fire or the fire may be already extinguished.

Building Inspections

As required by law all commercial buildings must have an annual building inspection. We have an obligation to the community and the local government to accomplish valid inspections.

Quartzsite Fire District,

Community Services

Our sincere desire and drive are to serve at every opportunity that presents itself. We care for and appreciate the members of our communities and wish to support them in any way we can. It is our hope that our community will feel comfortable approaching us for any needed assistance, that's why we smile so much. Even if no invite is extended, our heads are on a swivel to find chances to lend a helping hand.

Community Involvement

It's our pleasure to spend time with school students, church groups, and others in our community. Our goals in our interactions are to establish learning experiences. In the school setting, we're able to take the skills and knowledge that we've longed to obtain and share it with the students who wish to acquire advanced skills that can save future lives.

Quartzsite Fire District,

Fire Safety for People with Special Needs

Statistics:

Each year:

  • There are approximately 700 home fires involving people with physical disabilities.
  • There are approximately 1,700 home fires involving people with mental disabilities.
  • Kitchens and cooking areas are the primary areas where these fires start.

Tips:

Understand your fire risk - Having physical or mental disabilities does not mean you are unable to take the important steps to keep you and your family safe from fire.

Install and Maintain Smoke Alarms - Smoke alarms with a vibrating pad or flashing light are available for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Smoke alarms with a strobe light outside the home to catch the attention of neighbors, and emergency call systems for summoning help, are also available.

Live Near An Exit - Being on the ground floor and near an exit will make your escape easier.

Plan Your Escape - Plan your escape around your capabilities. If you use a walker or wheelchair, check all exits to be sure you can get through the doorways.

Don't Isolate Yourself - Contact the Fire Department on the non-emergency line and explain your needs. We can suggest escape plan ideas and may perform a home fire safety inspection if you ask.
